Both are expected to be mid-range smartphones running on MediaTek SoC.
After CES 2017 concluded earlier this month, everyone now have their attention turned on next month’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017. Scheduled to kick off on February 27, the event will be held in Barcelona. While we have still been reading a lot of speculated devices to be launched at the event, Sony has already sent out invites to the media.
While the invite does not talk about what could possibly be launched at the event, Sony is likely to unveil two devices, Xperia Blog reports. Recently, there were reports that Sony will unveil two smartphones powered MediaTek Helio P20 MT6757 chipset. Bearing model numbers – G3112 (G31XX) and the G3221 (G32XX), little details about the hardware are also know. Based on the the previous leaks, both smartphones are likely to be powered by an octa-core SoC – a combination of 2.3GHz quad-core (Cortex A53 cores) + 1.6GHz quad-core (Cortex A53 cores) paired with Mali-T880 GPU. Additionally, Sony G3112 is expected to feature a 720p display whereas the Sony G3221 could use a higher 1080p display.
In addition to the two anticipated Sony smartphones, the flagship smartphones from Motorola, Samsung, and Nokia are also expected to be seen at the MWC 2017. Nokia will be making a much-awaited comeback at the event this year with its Android-powered smartphones. Late last year, HMD Global had confirmed its presence at MWC 2017, and we can expect the unveiling of multiple Nokia-branded smartphones. While the Nokia 6 was unveiled earlier this month, Nokia 8 and Nokia P1 smartphones are expected to be showcased at MWC.
Based on the leaks, the Nokia P1 is expected to feature a 5.3-inch display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. It is also expected to feature 128GB and 256GB onboard storage options, 3,500mAh battery with quick charging capabilities, and a fingerprint sensor. For photography, it is expected to be equipped with a 22.6-megapixel rear camera with Zeiss-certification. The P1 is likely to be quite durable with IP57-level resistance to water and dust, and it will run on Android Nougat 7.0 out-of-the-box. The leak also suggests that prices for the Nokia P1 is expected to start from $800 (Rs 54,300 approximately) for the 128GB model, and go up to $950 (Rs 64,500 approximately) for the 256GB variant. The price seems to be a bit too good to be true, and we would advise the usual dose of caution.
Nokia 8, on the other hand, was last week caught in a little back and forth. A couple of videos had surfaced online which claimed that Qualcomm had accidentally shown off the Nokia 8 while demoing its latest Snapdragon 835 SoC at CES 2017. Almost immediately there were speculations that this was a high-end Nokia smartphone that would take on the likes of the iPhones and Pixels. But the chipset maker refuted these claims.
So, up till now we know that the Nokia 8 aka Nokia Supreme may come in two variants — one with the latest Snapdragon 835 and 6GB of RAM, and the other with Snapdragon 821 chipset and 4GB of RAM. And if the leaked videos are to be believed the smartphone is believed to feature a 24-megapixel primary camera with OIS and EIS support, along with a front-facing 12-megapixel snapper. In the video, we also hear the voice-over about dual front speakers on the handset, and that they feature a Super AMOLED QHD display.
Then Motorola is also expected to take the wraps off the Moto G5 Plus at the event. So far we know, that the Moto G5 Plus is expected to feature a 5.5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. It is likely to be powered by a 2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with Adreno 506 graphics, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage which could be further boosted via microSD card. For photography, the G5 Plus is expected to pack a 16-megapixel rear camera with dual-LED flash. For selfies, it could come with a 5-megapixel front camera. Keeping the smartphone ticking will be a 3,080mAh battery. On the software front, the G5 Plus will run the more recent Android Nougat out-of-the-box. Moto G5 Plus, likely to be the higher-priced of the two variants, is expected to be available at $300 in international markets (approximately Rs 20,400). For Indian consumers, the smartphone could make its debut as soon as March when MWC concludes, and it is likely to be priced slightly less at $230 (approximately Rs 15,600), Android Headlines reported.
MWC 2017 may also witness the unveiling of Samsung Galaxy S8. It is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 SoC or Exynos 8895 chipset built on 10nm process, paired with 6GB or 8GB of RAM. For photography, it could feature dual-camera setup at the back — one 16-megapixel RGB sensor, and an 8-megapixel monochrome sensor, but the leaked renders that we have come across only hint at a single camera. For selfies, there the front-facing camera could come with auto-focus capabilities.
Other than that, the Galaxy S8 is believed to be fuelled by a 4,200mAh battery with wireless charging capabilities, heart-rate sensor, water and dust resistance, and connectivity options like 4G with VoLTE, and Bluetooth 5.0. The smartphone is also expected to come integrated with a smart assistant, a competition to Google Assistant. On the software front, the Galaxy S8 could run Android Nougat 7.1.1 out-of-the-box.
