More builds are expected to come in soon.

After the most popular custom ROM CyanogenMod saw a final shutdown late last year, LineageOS was formed as a continuation of the project. Some of the members of the original CyanogenMod team had announced that they are building a community-driven Android ROM, under a new moniker, called LineageOS. And already, the first official build of the LineageOS has started to roll out.

The team behind LineageOS has started uploading builds for a few devices, starting off right from where Cyanogen left off. So far, they have put up builds for Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Moto G4 and G4 Plus, Nextbit Robin, and Xiaomi Redmi 1S devices. However, more builds are expected to come in soon.

The builds are called Lineage, instead of CyanogenMod, and tagged with the same build number system as CyanogenMod’s (14.1 stands for Nougat 7.1 and 13.0 stands for Marshmallow 6.0). These builds should start appearing on the official download page this weekend, or in a matter of hours. Do note, that the Lineage OS builds won’t be directly compatible with existing CyanogenMod ones, which generally means migrating users will have to wipe their devices and start with a clean slate. However, there are some builds labeled “experimental” and are meant for the ones who don’t want to wipe clean and get started again, so that they can flash these builds on top of CyanogenMod 13 or CyanogenMod14.1. ALSO READ: Cyanogen is dead; LineageOS aims to be ‘continuation of what CyanogenMod was’

Additionally, to find out, which all devices are slated to receive the build update, you can refer to a full list of build targets shared by Team Lineage. And in order to download these builds, you will have head to download.lineageos.org. As far as a release schedule goes, the team will likely stick to its typical cycle with a release candidate every week, signed with a private key for authentication and signature control and nightlies along the way.

Also, it is important to note that, as we had learnt earlier, unlike CyanogenMod LineageOS will not allow root by default, but the project will provide a separate flashable zip to root your device. However, that doesn’t seem to be available as yet. ALSO READ: Cyanogen OS alternatives for OnePlus One users; how to unlock bootloader, flash custom recovery and install custom ROM

For the one’s still unaware of the entire Cyanogen saga, let us catch you up to speed. Cyanogen, the company that once aimed to build a better version of Android than Google, shot to fame with its CyanogenMod custom ROMs and Cyanogen OS that powered the popular smartphones like the OnePlus One. However, after tasting the instant fame, the company started to see a series of roadblocks, which ultimately forced the company to shut down its services, announcing a final goodbye late last month.
