Alcatel is rumored to launch as many as five smartphones at MWC 2017 next month.

Alcatel has confirmed that it will be showing up at the upcoming Mobile World Congress event this February at Barcelona. A spate of rumors have been circulating around the different smartphone that will see the light of day at MWC 2017. While Sony has recently been rumored to launch five smartphones, Alcatel could be doing the same as well.

The details on the five smartphones that Alcatel will reportedly launch are scarce at the moment, but not for one, which is said to feature modular functionality. LG introduced the modular functionality on smartphones with the G5 but in its attempt failed to impress the masses. Motorola, last year made headlines with its Moto Mods for the Moto Z which turned out to be a head turner. Now it remains to be seen if Alcatel will make a difference with its modular smartphone, if the rumors are to be believed. The leak comes from a Hungarian publication (spotted by GSMArena) which reveals the key specifications of the smartphone and also shows what could be a mod attached on the back of the smartphone. The details, however on how many mods would be available or what categories it would fit into are not available.

Seen above in the picture is the alleged Alcatel smartphone with a mod which looks to be filled with LED lights. This particular mod is said to glow in different colors according to the music played on the smartphone. The functionality is similar to what we see in the JBL Pulse speakers. Since only parts of the smartphone’s back are visible not much can be judged from the images. What can be seen is the rear camera lens placed on the top let corner, and the rounded edges bearing resemblance to the iPhone 5 series.

As for its specifications, what has been revealed through the leak includes a 13-megapixel rear camera which will come with dual-tone LED flash. At the core of the smartphone, it will run a MediaTek chipset with an octa-core processor. Its pricing is currently suspected to fall around €320 (Rs 27,400). This Alcatel smartphone with modular functionality is also rumored to be the Idol 5 smartphone, which would essentially be the successor to Idol 4 which was launched at the MWC last year. However, there is no information around the launch of the Idol 5 smartphone.

Alcatel had launched the Idol 4 smartphone in India last year for Rs 16,999, which came bundled with a VR headset and JBL earphones. The Alcatel Idol 4 also features a dedicated button on the right side that works as a shortcut to apps like camera, photos and videos. It comes with a 5.2-inch full HD IPS display with 2D glass on top. Under its hood, it runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 617 processor with Adreno 405 GPU and paired with 3GB of RAM. The smartphone comes with 16GB onboard storage which is further expandable up to 512GB via a microSD card. Its connectivity options include 4G LTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, and USB OTG. The smartphone is powered by a 2,610mAh battery and it runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out-of-the-box.
