The Moto G4 Play has been launched in India with a price tag of Rs 8,999. The smartphone will be available via Amazon India, and will compete against the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime.

As expected, after launching the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus, Lenovo today launched the Moto G4 Play in India. In line with earlier leaks, the smartphone is priced at Rs 8,999 and will be going on sale via Amazon India at 10:00PM IST. As the name suggests, the Moto G4 Play is essentially a toned down version of the Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Plus. While the overall design and the water-repellant nano coating is retained, the specs are watered down. At this priced point, the Moto G4 Play will be up against the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime and the Honor Holly 2 Plus among others.

The Moto G4 Play flaunts a 5-inch HD (1280×720 pixels) display with 294ppi and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor paired with Adreno 306 GPU. The smartphone also comes with 2GB of RAM, and 16GB internal storage that can be expanded up to 128GB using a microSD card. In the photography department, the smartphone is equipped with an 8-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture, LED flash, 4X digital zoom and 1080p video recording capabilities. Up front, there is a 5-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture and display flash.

The Moto G4 Play also features a 2,800mAh battery that the company says is good enough to last a day, and a nano-coating that can repel accidental splashes of water. Connectivity options include dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE support, 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz), Bluetooth 4.1LE and A-GPS. On the software front, the smartphone runs on vanilla Android Marshmallow 6.0.1.

Priced at Rs 8,999, the Moto G4 Play will be up against the likes of Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime and the Honor Holly 2 Plus. Xiaomi’s smartphone too comes with a 5-inch 720p display, 5-megapixel selfie camera and dual-SIM connectivity. But you get a device with a metal body, fingerprint scanner, Snapdragon 430 chipset, 3GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage, VoLTE support and a massive 4,100mAh battery.

The Honor Holly 2 Plus also comes with a 5-inch 720p display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB storage, 5-megapixel selfie camera, and dual-SIM 4G connectivity. But it also offers a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a bigger 4,000mAh battery.

Interestingly, the Moto G4 Play is placed in a segment that also includes Lenovo’s Vibe K5 Plus. Though owned by the same company, the Vibe K5 Plus does seems to be the better option here since it comes with features like full HD (1080p) display, Snapdragon 616 octa-core processor, 3GB RAM, and a 13-megapixel rear camera.

A detailed comparison table follows.
