Xiaomi Pinecone processor February 28 launch

Xiaomi’s first in-house chipsets are expected to take on giants like Qualcomm and Samsung.

Xiaomi has been working for quite some time on its in-house processor Pinecone, which will be joining the likes of Samsung’s Exynos and Huawei’s Kirin processors. After months of speculation, Xiaomi finally created the official Weibo page for Pinecone, which followed with an announcement for the launch scheduled to take place on February 28. Even though we are just a few days away from the official launch, news revolving the Pinecone processor has surfaced online. One includes an online poll that Xiaomi hosted for the logo of Pinecone, and the other deals with the details on the two Pinecone chipsets.

It is quite obvious that the logo for Pinecone would be a pinecone, but the company seems to be experimenting with different designs. Xiaomi held an online poll on Chinese microblogging website Weibo asking users to choose from amongst four different logo designs for Pinecone. While there isn’t any stark difference between the logos, the online poll is sure to garner attention towards the launch of the Pinecone processor.

Xiaomi has been so far rumored to launch two versions of the Pinecone processors, which have been dubbed V670 and V970. Pinecone V970 is poised to be the more powerful out of the two, and will reportedly be built by Samsung on the 10nm process. GSMArena further reports that the Pinecone V970 chipset will feature an octa-core processor with four Cortex-A73 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores. The GPU for the Pinecone V970 will be a next-generation Mali-G71 MP12.

The Pinecone V670 chipset on the other hand, is way lighter in terms of its weight. This chipset is said to be processed on the old 28nm process and it will feature eight Cortex-A53 cores. These Cortex-A53 cores will be split in high and low-frequency clusters. The GPU for the Pinecone V670 chipset will be a basic Mali-T860 MP2.

It was earlier reported that Xiaomi’s Pinecone processors would be manufactured by Beijing Pinecone Electronics. It is also speculated that Xiaomi with the launch of its in-house Pinecone processors will reduce dependence on MediaTek and Qualcomm chipsets. Xiaomi could debut its Pinecone processor on the much-rumored Mi 5c smartphone. Previous reports claimed that the Pinecone processor would be used in the Xiaomi Mi 6 smartphone as well, but all arrows now point to the Mi 5c being the first Xiaomi smartphone with the Pinecone processor. According to the latest rumors, the Xiaomi Mi 5c is expected to feature a 5.1-inch or a 5.5-inch full HD display. The smartphone could come with 3GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage. For photography, the Mi 5c smartphone will most likely sport a 12-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. Connectivity options on the smartphone include 4G VoLTE support, and USB-Type C support. On the software front, the Mi 5c will possibly run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based MIUI 8.
