Asus is set to ditch the square form factor, and leaked photos suggest that the ZenWatch 3 is expected to come with a circular display. The third-generation smartwatch could be unveiled at IFA 2016 next month.
Asus has already launched two smartwatches running on Android Wear, namely ZenWatch and the ZenWatch 2. Now the company is said to be gearing up to launch the third-generation ZenWatch 3, and it could be unveiled at IFA 2016 next month. If reports are to be believed, the smartwatch’s talking point will be the Moto 360-like circular form factor.
The ZenWatch 3 was recently spotted online with a Redditor allegedly sharing photos of the smartwatch. The leaked photos clearly show a round form factor, but with the display turned off it is difficult to say if Asus is using the entire real estate or if there will be a Moto 360-like flat tyre. Also seen are three buttons on the right side. There are also two small connectors at the bottom which will surely connect to the charger.
Not much else is known about the ZenWatch 3, but the smartwatch was recently spotted on FCC. The listing reveals a couple of features like support for Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz), and it will also be bundled with a 5V 2A (10 watt) charger in the box.
A round display is a far cry from the ZenWatch 2 that launched in India earlier this year. It was launched in two variants — a smaller variant sporting a 1.45-inch AMOLED display, while the larger variant came with a 1.63-inch AMOLED display. Both were powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 400 SoC paired with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of onboard storage.
While nothing is official yet, it is widely expected that Asus could take the wraps off the ZenWatch 3 at IFA 2016 next month. Asus won’t be the only one launching a smartwatch next week either, and Samsung today confirmed its plans to launch the Gear S3, Gear S3 Classic smartwatches on August 31.
