This update is for the Galaxy S6 series under At&T carrier service in the US.
Samsung finally started rolling out the Android 7.0 Nougat update for its older Galaxy S6 series. Samsung started rolling out the software update for Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge users in Europe. The update later hit the Indian market and other Asian markets for the Galaxy S6 edge+. Samsung is continuing with the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy S6 series and the latest to receive are users in the US under AT&T carrier service. The update is rolling out for AT&T Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 active users. Galaxy S6 edge+ had already received the update along with the Galaxy Note 5.
AT&T is the third carrier to join the update as both Sprint and Verizon have already updated the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge last month. Other than getting the changeover with Android 7.0 Nougat running on the Galaxy S6 devices, users get a few more updates as well. Among these new changes include Samsung Cloud and Samsung Pass. With Samsung Cloud, users will be able to sync their data to cloud storage. Samsung Pass allows biometric authentication like iris and fingerprint scanner for mobile banking services or website login.
AT&T Galaxy S6 users will be receiving the April security patch with this latest update. Google has already released the May security update which should arrive on these devices soon. The update also brings additional fixes and enhancements. In addition to this, the update will be removing AT&T Address Book and MobiTV. The Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy S6 will be around 1.2GB, 1.3GB for the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 active. ALSO READ: Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ hands-on and first impressions
Since it will be an over-the-air (OTA) update, it could take about a week to reach all the Galaxy S6 devices. Users should get a notification regarding the software update but for those who wish to check it manually can do so by following these simple steps – Settings -> About Phone -> Software Update. Since the update is big, it’s advisable that a Wi-Fi connection be used. General changes that Android 7.0 Nougat will bring include split-screen multi-tasking, customizable quick settings and new Google keyboard. More features include inline reply feature, revamped notifications bar, multi-app usage, data saving mode, new emojis, and quicker navigation.
With more Galaxy S6 devices eligible for the Android 7.0 Nougat update, it should help with the distribution system as it is currently running on a slow pace. The Android distribution chart for May showed that Android 7.0 Nougat is running on 6.6 percent devices. The Galaxy S6 series which is two years old and still sits between mid-range and high-end segment is receiving the update only now. It remains to be seen if Samsung would be rolling out the update for its even older smartphones as well. ALSO READ: Android Nougat now running on 7.1% devices globally, Lollipop still leads with 32%
