Unlike the new Apple iPhone 7, the upcoming Google Pixel smartphones won't have much water-resistant capabilities. Reports say they could be IP53 certified.
With Apple’s new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus getting water-resistant capabilities, it won’t be too much to expect Google to adopt the same feature as well. But if you are expecting the upcoming Google Pixel smartphones to be water-resistant, you are likely to be disappointed. According to a report, the upcoming Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones will be IP53 certified, as opposed to the IP67 certification on Apple’s new iPhones.
Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL will be IP53 certified according to AndroidPolice. This allows the smartphones to survive exposure to water at very low pressure (between 7-20PSI) and that too only if the device is held at a vertical angle (not exceeding 60 degrees). In simpler terms, as long as you are holding the devices vertically, you will be able to take them out during light rains to check who is calling or send a quick text. As long as the device is not exposed to water for more than five minutes, there is every chance that the water droplets will just slide down the surface of the phone. If the report is true, it would be disappointing that the upcoming Google Pixel smartphones won’t have better water resistance. Nearly all high-end devices these days do come with some manner of resistant to water and dust. Even an affordable smartphone like the recently launched Moto E3 Power has water-resistant capabilities to an extent courtesy of the nano-coating on the inside and outside.
Google has sent out media invites for an event on October 4, where it is expected to unveil the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. Recent leaked photos show a design that is very HTC-like, which is not surprising, considering the smartphones are being manufactured by the Taiwanese company. Google is also expected to unveil a bunch of other devices next month, including a 4K-capable Chromecast, a Daydream device reportedly called Daydream View, and Google Home. Based on what we have come across so far, the Google Pixel is expected to feature a 5-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) display, Snapdragon 820 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 32GB storage, 12-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. It is also expected to include a fingerprint scanner at the back, a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack. The Google Pixel XL, on the other hand, is likely to feature a larger 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED display, Snapdragon 820/821 chipset, 4GB RAM, 32GB and 128GB storage options, 12-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel selfie camera, a 3,450mAh battery, and USB Type-C port. Both smartphones are expected to run on Android Nougat 7.1 out-of-the-box.
