Xiaomi 5X with MIUI 9, 5x optical zoom support expected to launch today; here’s what we know so far

Xiaomi X5 is likely to be the first smartphone to run the new MIUI 9, based on the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat


Xiaomi is set to unveil its new smartphone, dubbed as the Xiaomi 5X, in China today. According to rumors, the Xiaomi 5X will be the first smartphone under Xiaomi’s new Lanmi sub-brand, which is supposedly aim to help the company recapture market share from the leading brands like Huawei, OPPO and Vivo in China. There’s also a lot of buzz around the smartphone because it is also rumored to come with Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 9, which will be based on Android Nougat.

It is worth noting that Xiaomi had already open registrations for the upcoming 5X smartphone and the company claims registrations had already crossed the 100,000 mark. The smartphone will go on sale from August 1 whereas pre-orders for the smartphone have already commenced.

Coming to the pricing of the smartphone, the Xiaomi X5 is expected to be priced somewhere around 1,999 Yuan, which is approximately Rs 19,000. The USP of the smartphone is likely to be the dual-rear camera setup. Meanwhile, a few posters of the phone were leaked online, revealing schematics of the device.

Based on the rumors and leaks so far, the Xiaomi 5X is expected to feature a thin metallic body with a horizontally aligned dual rear camera setup accompanied by a dual-tone dual-LED flash on the top left-hand side. The camera is expected to come with whopping 5x optical zoom support. The phone retains the 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom. The smartphone is likely to launch in gold and black color variants. Rumors suggest that the smartphone will come equipped with a front facing fingerprint scanner. ALSO READ: 

On the specifications front, the smartphone is likely to come with a 5.5-inch full HD display.Under the hood, the smartphone is expected to be powered by Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The smartphone is said to be armed with a 3,000mAh battery. On the software front, the smartphone is expected to run Android Nougat 7.1.1 with Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 9 out-of-the-box. Apart from this, the smartphone was recently listed on FCC hinting at one more variant of the smartphone with Snapdragon 660 chipset, 64GB internal storage, and 6GB RAM. This might be the premium variant of the phone and can be priced higher when compared to the base variant.
