Apple is said to be using a different charging setup than the one used by Android smartphones.
Apple iPhone 8 has long been rumored to come with wireless charging functionality, a first for iPhones. While there are quite a few wireless chargers on sale these days for Android devices, the iPhone 8 will unsurprisingly not support any of these. Apple will use ‘Made for iPhone (Mfi)’ chargers which are likely to be sold as an additional accessory, and not be available out-of-the-box. However, the charger will support all three upcoming iPhones – iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, and iPhone 8. The wireless charging functionality is however expected to be enabled at a later date by Apple.
As reported by Makotara, Apple will not follow the current Qi wireless charging that supports charging up to 15 watts, but will stick to Mfi charger with a much lesser capacity of just 7.5 watts. However, the battery size in comparison is set to increase with the iPhone 8 sporting a battery as large as 2,700mAh, the highest to be seen in an Apple smartphone. The Apple Watch, which supports wireless charging, is also bound by the same constraints and can be charged only using a special Apple charger with the Mfi license. This also means that the iPhone 8 wireless charging will be considerably slower, and is likely to take much longer to reach full charge. If true, it might be wise and faster to just stick to the standard charger for a speedy charge. It is currently unknown if Apple has tied up with third-party accessory manufacturers for other variants of their chargers. If the iPhone is charged using any other charger, the device will simply not accept the charge as it will most likely come inbuilt with a Mfi license detector.
Another well-leaked feature is the display size. The smallest, iPhone 7s will reportedly come with a 4.7-inch HD Retina display, the iPhone 7s Plus with a 5.5-inch Retina display, and the largest iPhone 8 with a 5.8-inch display. However, the report does not confirm whether the iPhone 8 will indeed come in a bezel-free avatar or will retain some bezels on the top and the bottom. Tipster Vengya Geskin has also shared an image of the iPhone 8 PCB which is ‘L’ shaped via Twitter. It is unknown if the smaller iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus will also sport the same ‘L’ shaped PCB. The smaller PCB also comes with a support for larger battery – something that has been a constant demand from iPhone users. Another leak also suggests that the iPhone 8 will come with the TouchID on the rear – right under the Apple logo, and not under the display or the power button, as was previously believed. With the iPhone 8 rumored to arrive on September 22, the leaks are expected to intensify.
