Someone dropped Xiaomi's Mi MIX bezel-less concept smartphone on the floor, and shattered our dreams.

Xiaomi’s new Mi MIX is widely considered to be the smartphone of the dreams with a beautiful bezel-less display and top-of-the-line specs and features. But all this comes at a price, and a person in China found it the hard way. Someone at a Xiaomi store in China accidentally dropped the Mi MIX and yes the display was left shattered.

The photo shared by XiaomiToday shows a unit of the Mi MIX with the upper-left corner damaged, which is an indication that it is the side that hit the floor first. But it is not just a scratch or dent, but the entire display panel seems to have come off. This doesn’t come as a huge surprise as the device comes with a 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio, and no Gorilla Glass protection. It just proves that our dream to own a bezel-less smartphone remains a dream for now. No matter how beautiful it looks, there is no way we would like to spend close to Rs 40,000 on a device that can shatter at the slightest of impacts. Besides the display, the ceramic body too seems to have taken a lot of damage, and it is little wonder that Xiaomi has bundled a case with the Mi MIX.

Last week, Xiaomi surprised everyone by taking the wraps off its concept Mi MIX device alongside the Mi Note 2. The Mi MIX with its bezel-less display has been designed by Philippe Starck, and the company is quite proud of how it was able to overcome the difficulties to build the smartphone. Unlike a standard device that has an earpiece, proximity sensor and selfie camera on the front, the Mi MIX uses an advanced receiver-less sound transmission for delivering audio to your ears, and ultrasonic technology for proximity sensor, which is hidden below the display.

Xiaomi has used ceramic, and seamless connectors to fuse the Mi Mix’s body together. The left panel has a SIM card tray, the right panel has the volume rocker and power button, and the fingerprint scanner is placed at the back just below the camera module.

Xiaomi Mi MIX specifications

The Xiaomi Mi MIX flaunts a 6.4-inch OLED display, and is powered by a Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM. This variant comes with 128GB onboard storage. There is another ‘Pro’ variant with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage.

The smartphone also features a 16-megapixel rear camera with PDAF and EIS support, dual-tone LED flash, and a 5-megapixel camera. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE support, Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi 802.11ac. It is backed by a 4,000mAh battery and supports Quick Charge 3.0 via the USB Type-C port. On the software front, it runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow-based MIUI 8.

Xiaomi Mi MIX price

The Mi MIX is set to go on sale in China with prices starting from RMB 3,499 (approximately Rs 34,000) for the 128GB variant. The Pro variant, on the other hand, is priced at RMB 3,999 (approximately Rs 40,000). These prices, unsurprisingly, makes them Xiaomi’s most expensive smartphone still date.
