The app now lets you download content between Jio Happy Hours.
Reliance Jio has updated its JioCinema app that now allows users to save their favorite shows or movies offline to watch later. The JioCinema app is an on-demand video library that offers content in multiple languages and is exclusively available for Jio users. The latest download feature has been added to the JioCinema version 1.3.3 along with certain bug fixes and performance improvements.
The new version of the JioCinema app comes with a new ‘smart’ download option which allows you to schedule your downloads thereby allowing you to make the most of Jio’s Happy Hours feature under the Happy New Year offer. Under Happy Hours, Reliance Jio is offering unlimited internet for three hours in night from 2AM to 5AM daily. Now, with the smart download feature, you can put your favorite content on JioCinema for download during the night and have the content ready by the morning so you can watch it offline while you commute to work . Here’s how the feature works:
Before you start exploring the download option, you need to update the JioCinema app to its latest version 1.3.3. Once you do that, you can browse through over 1 lakh hours of content available on the service. Select the content from the categories (shows, movies, music, etc.) and tap on download. You will now have the option to choose from the quality of the video from low, medium, and high. For downloading, you can select either Download Now or Smart Download. The second option will schedule the downloading in Jio Happy Hours. All your downloaded content will be placed under the My Downloads tab in the main menu.
It is to be noted that you cannot download all the content but only certain shows, music, or movies are available with the download option. There is a filter option within the download section that allows you to sort content based on category. The My Downloads section also shows you the remaining storage available on the app. Given the limited storage of close to 4GB, you might have to keep clearing out watched content to be able to download more. One of the features of the JioCinema app is that it allows you to resume watching your content from where you left off across any compatible device. The app is available both for iOS and Android. However, the latest update is currently available only for Android users and is expected to be soon rolled out to iOS users. With an interface quite similar to the popular YouTube app, the JioCinema app has been tweaked to suit the Indian audience’s needs. One can browse content based on genre, language, and category. It also comes with voice search support and offers personalized movie recommendations based on user behaviour.
With the new download feature, JioCinema comes in the same league as Hotstar, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, which also offer download features. In late last year, Netflix introduced the ability to download shows or movies and watch it offline. On the other hand, Amazon Prime Video, which made its debut in India in December 2016, also allows Prime members to download select titles and watch them later. While both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are paid on-demand video services, content on the JioCinema app is available for free.
