We pitted the two major flagship smartphones against each other and here's how they fare based on various parameters.
Earlier today, LG announced its G6 smartphone in India at an event in New Delhi. Priced at Rs 51,990, the G6 is the newest premium offering from LG in the flagship smartphone category. At this price point, the smartphone directly competes with the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S8. We pitted the two major flagship smartphones against each other and here’s how they fare based on various parameters.
Pricing and availability: The LG G6 is priced at Rs 51,990 and will be available exclusively via Amazon India starting April 25. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is priced at Rs 57,900 and the Galaxy S8+ costs Rs 64,900 and will go on sale starting May 5. You can purchase the Galaxy S8 lineup from Samsung’s e-Store, Flipkart and from select offline retailers.
Design: The LG G6 marks a shift from the modular G5 that was launched last year. It goes back to a metal frame with front and back glass in a unibody design. If one compares, both LG and Samsung have opted for an identical design language for their newest flagship smartphones. The G6 also features a near bezel-less display and gets rid of any physical buttons, instead, the Android navigation buttons are no on-screen ones.
Display: The LG G6 boasts a 5.7-inch display QHD+ display with a resolution of 2880×1440 pixels, aspect ratio of 18:9 (or 2:1) and pixel density of 564ppi. The Samsung Galaxy S8, on the other hand, boasts a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED dual-edge curved display, offering 2960×1440 pixels and pixel density of 570 ppi, the display has a widescreen aspect ratio of 18.5:9. Although both smartphones offer near bezel-less display experience, it is the Galaxy S8 which stands out, owing to its spilling dual edge curved display.
Hardware: The LG G6 is powered by Qualcomm’s 64-bit Snapdragon 821 quad-core SoC paired with 4GB of RAM. With 64GB of on-board storage, a microSD card slot for further storage expansion is also present.
The Galaxy S8 runs on Samsung’s homebrewed 64-bit Exynos 8895 octa-core SoC, paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. There is also a slot for storage expansion up to 256GB.
One of the key difference here is the chipset manufacturing. The Snapdragon 821 is built using 14nm process whereas the Exynos 8895 is built using 10nm fabrication process. The fabrication process used in Exynos SoC offers the smartphone with the required power, while also ensuring efficiency and performance.
Camera: The LG G6 is equipped with a pair of 13-megapixel dual camera sensors at the back, of which one is a wide-angle lens with 125-degree field of view and f/2.4 aperture, and another is a standard lens with 71-degree field-of-view, f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS). Up front, there is a 5-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture.
The Samsung Galaxy S8, on the other hand, features a 12-megapixel rear camera with f/1.7 aperture along with optical image stabilization (OIS), phase-detection auto-focus (PDAF) and 4K video recording capabilities. Up front, there is an 8-megapixel front-facing camera with auto-focus to ensure blur free photos and videos.
Battery and connectivity: The LG G6 is powered by a 3,330mAh battery with fast charging capabilities while the Samsung Galaxy S8 is fuelled by a 3,000mAh battery. The Galaxy S8 also supports wireless fast charging. Both the smartphones feature USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer. Other connectivity features include Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and 4G LTE with VoLTE voice calling support.
The Galaxy S8 offers support for dual SIM through the hybrid setup, whereas LG G6 has a single SIM card slot. Both the smartphones further include biometric authentication through fingerprint sensors, whereas the Galaxy S8 is also equipped with an iris scanner.
