Here’s how the latest Vivo V5s selfie-centric smartphone fares against its competitors.

Vivo is clearly obsessed with its V5 series as it introduced yet another variant today. Called the Vivo V5s, the smartphone is priced at Rs 18,990, and as expected, it too boasts selfie-centric features. As more manufacturers are cashing in on the selfie-obsessed nature of Indians, we pitted the Vivo V5s against other smartphones available in the market — Gionee A1 and OPPO F1s, which boast similar capabilities and are priced in the sub-Rs 20,000 category as well. Here’s how the three smartphone compete against each other.

Pricing and availability: Vivo V5 is priced at Rs 18,990 and will be available starting May 6. It is available in color choices of Crown Gold and Matte Black. The Gionee A1 is priced at Rs 19,999 and available in three color choices of black, grey, and gold. The OPPO F1s is priced at Rs 17,990 and available in color choices of rose gold, grey, and gold.

Display and design: Vivo V5s brings no major upgrade over its predecessor in terms of display or design. It features a 5.5-inch HD display with 1280x720p resolution, which is further protected with 2.5D curved glass on top.

In comparison, the Gionee A1 boasts a 5.5-inch full HD (1080p) AMOLED display, while the OPPO F1s features a 5.5-inch HD (720p) IPS TFT display. At the given price point, the Gionee A1 evidently stands out as it delivers a higher display resolution at the same size. All the three smartphones boast metal unibody design and feature fingerprint sensors which are embedded in their front home buttons.

Hardware: As a variant to the older Vivo V5, the V5s has no change in hardware either, except for the onboard storage. It is powered by a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek MT6750 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of default storage which can be further expanded up to 256GB via microSD card.

Gionee A1, on the other hand, runs a MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core 2GHz SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which can also be expanded up to 256GB via microSD card. ALSO READ: Vivo V5 to Gionee A1: Top 5 selfie-centric smartphones in India, priced under Rs 20,000

OPPO F1s is also powered by the same chipset as the Vivo V5s, but paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 128GB via micro SD card.

If one takes into consideration the price difference, the Vivo V5s and Gionee A1 make for a better deal with more onboard storage and RAM, which decides the overall performance of the smartphone.

Camera: USP of these competing smartphones is their camera prowess. Being selfie-centric smartphones, all boast higher megapixel count along with some added features. Vivo V5s for one boasts a 20-megapixel front-facing camera with Vivo’s signature ‘Moonlight’ flash. It further includes a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash.

Both Gionee A1 and OPPO F1s pack same megapixel count for their front and rear cameras. The Gionee A1 boasts a 16-megapixel front camera with LED flash along with a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, PDAF support, and LED flash. OPPO F1s is equipped with a 16-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture along with a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture.

Battery and connectivity: Vivo V5s is fuelled by a 3,000mAh battery. Gionee A1 has the maximum battery capacity in the list. It is fuelled by a 4,010mAh battery, while the OPPO F1s packs a 3,075mAh battery. In terms of connectivity, all smartphones offer dual-SIM support, 4G LTE, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and USB. Vivo V5s and Gionee A1 also offer USB OTG support.

Operating system: Despite being a new launch, the Vivo V5s runs on an older Android Marshmallow with FunTouch OS 3.0 layered above. Gionee A1 in this feature stands out for being an Android Nougat-powered smartphone. The OPPO F1s, on the other hand, runs on an even older Android 5.1 Lollipop with ColorOS 3.0 layered above. ALSO READ: Gionee A1 Review

While these smartphones do add to the flourishing selfie-smartphone market, there are subtle differences in the specifications on offer which place them neck-and-neck in the competition. If you are not worried about the higher megapixel count and are keen on having the newer Android experience along with a better battery life, then Gionee A1 makes for a wiser choice. However, if you want more megapixels on the front along with a slightly fancy design then Vivo V5s is the option to opt for in the sub-Rs 20,000 category.
