Netflix has announced that its app version 5.0 for Android will come with support for HDR and Dolby Vision content.
The year 2017 saw the release of two smartphones with HDR compatibilities – the LG G6 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 duo. However, the argument of lack of content for the same remained pertinent, until now! Just in time, Netflix has announced that its app version 5.0 for Android will come with HDR and Dolby Vision content.
“Streaming Netflix in HDR and Dolby Vision is coming soon and requires Netflix app version 5.0 for Android. The updated app is not yet available.” Currently, Netflix only lists LG G6 under the compatible devices for the new version, however, we are hoping the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ will be added to the list soon.
It was about two months ago when HDR and Dolby Vision content on Netflix was announced. In a keynote address at MWC 2017, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has promised to graduate the platform’s its content to support HDR technology on mobile devices. “Starting with the LG G6 phones that support both Dolby Vision and HDR 10 streams, Netflix would be supporting HDR on mobile devices,” he had said. Netflix users now don’t have to have an expensive TV to get HDR quality as Netflix brings the best picture quality to a small screen and making the best picture quality even more accessible, he added. Additionally, GSMArena points out that while Amazon Prime Video’s support page mentions support for HDR content, it lists only the Galaxy Note7 (which was pulled off shelves last year) under compatible devices. Surprisingly, Amazon isn’t even considering the already existing LG G6 and Galaxy S8 for the content.
What’s really odd here is that HDR content is not even news right now. At present, there is a decent amount of HDR content out there, just that it is yet to be made available for mobile. And it’s high time that these online streaming platforms turn the tap on for HDR content!
For future, Netflix also has plans to explore the field of Artificial Intelligence, a newfound focus area for technology bigwigs like Google and Facebook. “In 20 years, we’re going to get into some serious AI,” Hastings said. In 20 to 50 years, things get complicated, the CEO said, suggesting that humans may be augmented by AI, or that AI will take over the world.
