The Honor 8 with its dual camera setup is all set to launch in India today. Here's a look at everything we know about the device.

Huawei-backed Honor is all set to launch its flagship Honor 8 smartphone today in India. The smartphone will be arriving in India nearly two months after it was launched in China. If the leaks are to be believed, Honor might also be launching another smartphone today, an affordable variant called Honor 8 Smart. With just a few hours to the launch event, here’s a look at everything we know about the smartphones launching today.

The Honor 8 is a premium device with an aluminum design and a 2.5D glass covering the front and back. The highlight of the device however is the dual-camera setup at the back. A growing number of companies these days are pushing the limits of what smartphone cameras can do, and one of the paths they are taking is by opting for two cameras at the back. Similar to the much-talked about Huawei P9, the Honor 8 too comes with a pair of 12-megapixel rear cameras with f/2.2 aperture, pixel size of 1.76-micron, and dual LED flash. Of the two camera sensors, one captures images in RGB colors while the other does monochrome. The company says the lenses work together to capture good quality photos even in low light conditions.

Honor 8 specifications

Besides the camera bit, the Honor 8 features a 5.2-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) display with 2.5D curved glass on top and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. Under the hood is Huawei’s Kirin 950 octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz. In China, Honor launched its smartphone in three variants — two 32GB variants with 3GB and 4GB RAM, and a 64GB variant with 4GB of RAM. It will be interesting to see which variant Honor launches today in India. All variants sport a microSD card slot to expand the internal memory.

In addition to the dual-camera setup at the back, the Honor 8 also boasts an 8-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.4 aperture and full HD video recording capabilities. The smartphone also features a 3,000mAh battery that the company claims is good enough to offer up to nine hours of online video streaming and up to 24 hours of online music. Connectivity options include dual-SIM card slots (hybrid setup), 4G LTE support, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, NFC, IR Blaster and  USB Type-C port with OTG support. On the software front, the Honor 8 runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 wrapped under Huawei’s EMUI 4.1.

If the leaks are to be believed, the Honor 8 is likely to launch in India with a price tag of Rs 29,999. At this premium price tag, the smartphone will face competition from the likes of the OnePlus 3, LeEco Le Max2, and the recently launched Lenovo Z2 Plus as well. These smartphones are a tad cheaper than the Honor 8, but are more or less on par when it comes to specifications and features.

Leaks also suggest that today we could see the launch of another smartphone, called the Honor 8 Smart. While details are scarce, this smartphone is believed to be a toned down version of the Honor 8, and it will be launched without the dual-camera setup on board. Leaks further suggest that the Honor 8 Smart could launch with a price tag of Rs 19,999.
