The Xiaomi Redmi 4 is priced between Rs 6,999 and Rs 10,999. It goes on sale on May 23.
Xiaomi today launched the Redmi 4, which basically succeeds the Redmi 3s lineup in India. In order to do so, the new smartphone has some big shoes to fill in a manner of speaking. The Redmi 3s, after all, is among the most online sold smartphones in India. Recently, Xiaomi India’s Manu Kumar Jain revealed that the company had sold over 4 million units of the Redmi 3s smartphones in India in just nine months. So the question is, can the Redmi 4 match or exceed its predecessor’s success? Suffice to say, initial signs look promising.
When it comes to the budget segment, design and build quality are often overlooked in favor of specifications and features. With the Redmi 4, however, it is good to see Xiaomi has focused on the overall package. With a unibody metal design, curved edges and a 2.5D curved glass up front, the new smartphone looks and feels premium. With a 5-inch display, the compact form factor too comes as a pleasant change from the overdose of Android phablets.
While Xiaomi has retained all the specifications and features that made the Redmi 3s popular, it has made a couple of changes. For one, the chipset under the hood is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435. Though it is the same as the Snapdragon 430 that powers the Redmi 3s Prime, the newer chipset comes with an improved LTE modem.
Prices for the Redmi 4 start from Rs 6,999 for the variant with 16GB storage and 2GB RAM. Very few noteworthy smartphones come to mind with these kinds of specifications-price value in this highly competitive segment. Xiaomi, however, is also giving a couple of other options if you have the budget. The 32GB storage variant with 3GB RAM is priced at Rs 8,999, while the variant with 64GB storage and 4GB RAM is priced at Rs 10,999. While the top-model trespasses into the territory of the Redmi Note 4, it will still find takers among people who don’t want to buy big 5.5-inch smartphones. Having spent some time with the smartphone, I admit that the Redmi 4 does impress you with everything that is on offer. For its price, you get a device that is not only good looking but also performs well on a day-to-day basis. It not only ticks all the right boxes for this category, but the compact form factor is also something that will certainly appeal to a lot of buyers.
Besides the design and specifications though, what is set to really work in the favor of Redmi 4 is the availability. During the launch event today, Manu Kumar Jain revealed that Xiaomi was working on having more units of its new smartphone available for buyers. On May 23, the Redmi 4 will be going on sale on Amazon India and mi.com. At the same time though, the smartphone will also be available offline via the Mi Home store in Bengaluru. Xiaomi is promising that there are enough stocks available offline at the store, and in the case, they do run out, a buyer will get an F Code that can be redeemed on mi.com.
